Notice of intent to make a determination

Zagime Anishinabek Solid Waste Transfer Station - Public Comments Invited

November 25, 2022 - Indigenous Services Canada must determine whether the proposed Zagime Anishinabek Solid Waste Transfer Station, located on Sakimay IR 74, is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

The Proposed Project

- Construction of a solid waste transfer station site to be located on NW 1/4 - Sec 16 - Twp 18 - Rge 06 - W2M. The proposal includes earthen fill unloading ramp, lock block retaining walls, concrete pads, fencing and vehicle stops, fenced areas for recyclable and hazardous waste sorting;
- Construction of an attendant building / garage to store the collection truck or skidsteer;
- Construction of an approach / access road;

Solid waste transfer station site is approximately 2.0 ha and will serve as a waste disposal site for the community.  Expected life span of the project is 20+ years.

Project activities include:

Pre-planning - feasibility study and preliminary design report completed to define scope and project risks; detailed design to identify construction procedures.
Site preparation - vegetation and topsoil removal from construction areas.
Construction - earthwork to build up loading ramp, concrete pouring, construction of lock block walls, build attendant shelter / garage, fencing, gravel driving surface.
Operation - somewhat low operating requirements - maintenance on building and vehicles; cleanup of waste site, disposal of recyclables, burning of clean wood as approved.
Decommissioning - decommissioning of existing landfill is to be completed by others (not in scope of this capital project).  Phase II ESA to follow and describe work required.
