Notice of Determination

Taking into account established mitigation measures and relevant follow-up measures, Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) has determined that the proposed Service Line Repair Project at AECL's Chalk River site is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Potential environmental effects will be managed through technically and economically feasible mitigation measures. For example, stockpiling of soil as well as the disturbed ground after backfilling has the potential for soil erosion. Stockpiling will take place well away from any storm drain and mapping of specific locations will provided prior to excavation. Appropriate erosion control measures such as tarps will be put in place, if required. Re-asphalting will take place shortly after which will prevent any further erosion from dig site.  In the event that water needs to be pumped out of the excavation, the liquid will be sampled and analysed in order to determine the acceptable disposition route in accordance with all applicable legislation.

As the federal authority Atomic Energy of Canada gives permission to Canadian Nuclear Laboratories to carry out the project.
