April 22, 2022 – Infrastructure Canada must determine whether the proposed Kitselas Community Recreation Centre project in Terrace, BC is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this determination, Infrastructure Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments will be considered public. The Proposed Project

The project will construct an approximately 1700 square meter two-storey community recreation center near Terrace. The building will include a theatre, multi-purpose rooms, fitness room, gym, and commercial kitchen and be an important gathering space for the Kitselas First Nation.

The project works will include:

  • community theatre;
  • outdoor amphitheatre;
  • cultural classroom;
  • weight room;
  • conference room;
  • gym;
  • commercial kitchen;
  • reception area;
  • youth program area;
  • elder centre area; and,
  • other related works.

The proponent indicated that the new construction will have a project size of 1700 m2, and that the size of the area to be cleared of vegetation is 12500 m2.

The project will provide essential space for wellness and recreation for all ages as well as community gatherings and cultural events. The project will also improve access to, and quality of, recreation in a primarily indigenous area where the nearest recreation facility is more than 22 kilometers away.
