Notice of Intent to Make a Determination

Swan River First Nation Lakefront Development Project – Public Comments Invited
April 7, 2022 – Indigenous Services Canada must determine whether the proposed Swan River First Nation Lakefront Development Project, located in Kinuso, Alberta is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

The Proposed Project

This Project is part of an economic development plan to attract tourism to Swan River First Nation. It is located in SE 31-73-10 W5 on the shores of Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta. The Project will be developed in multiple phases for economic protection.
Phase 1 consists of the development of a four (4) luxury rental cabins, 12 annual lease RV sites and 6 yurt rental sites. Supporting infrastructure includes a lakefront tourism staging area (i.e. food shops, wood sales, fishing tours and snowmobile and atv rentals), stormwater infrastructure, power, water, and a sanitary holding tank, walking trails,  and access roads. The total Phase 1 Area will be approximately 15 acres. Phase 2 will add an additional 32 units and associated amenities (i.e., road access, sewage). It will be an additional ~450 ha. A concept plan is attached and details the proposed layout and Phases.
The land lease for the Project is currently valid until 2052.
