Public Comment Period on Intent to Make a Determination
Construction of New Building – Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Gander

February 16, 2022 — The Department of National Defence must decide whether the proposed project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this decision, the Department of National Defence is inviting comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. All comments received will be considered public. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website.

The Proposed Project

The Department of National Defence (DND) has proposed a project which involves the construction of a new facility to house the 5 Canadian Rangers Patrol Group at 9 Wing, Canadian Forces Base Gander. Project activities are expected to include tree clearing, grubbing, removal of the topsoil/organic root mat layer down to native ground, construction of a new asphalt access road, and building construction. The proposed building has a 1002 square meter footprint and will be constructed along Navy Road parallel with the street line. The general shape for the proposed building is a large single storey rectangle with a low slope roof and a varied interior layout. It will include a main entrance, vestibule, hall with display cases, kitchen, lounge, lockers, lactation room, gender neutral washroom and showers, meeting room, classroom, work room and ancillary spaces. The structural components of the building will be designed in accordance with the requirements set forth in of the National Building Code of Canada 2015 edition, and all referenced documents within. Proposed project activities are expected to begin in the 2022/2023 fiscal year.
