Notice of Determination

October 22, 2021 – Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed Chippewas of Nawash First Nation Water System Upgrades is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. Environment and Climate Change Canada has concluded they will not be a Federal Authority for this assessment.

The determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • There will be positive impacts on the rights of Indigenous peoples, including access to clean drinking water and;
  • Mitigation measures proposed for the project have been prepared and review by ISC.

Implementation of mitigation measures is required for the project to address:

  • Potential impacts on water quality;
  • Potential impacts on vegetation and wildlife;
  • Disturbance of aquatic habitat;
  • Potential impacts on Species at Risk; and
  • Potential impacts on Migratory Birds.

Indigenous Services Canada is satisfied that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, Indigenous Services Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
