Muskoday Convenience Store Remediation - Public Comments Invited

March 22, 2021 - Indigenous Services Canada must determine whether the proposed Muskoday Convenience Store Remediation, located on Muskoday IR 99 is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

 The Proposed Project

An environmental consultant has identified a plume of petroleum hydrocarbon impacts in soil and groundwater at the Muskoday Convenience Store & Gas Bar. A portion of the impacts are due to a 2018 release of fuel from an aboveground storage tank and the rest of the impacts remain from historical releases and contamination. Impacts have migrated from the west edge of the store to the southeast, crossing Chief David Knight Road, but not yet reaching the Muskoday Daycare. The proposal is to carry out anaerobic bioremediation to treat the impacts in place. Anaerobic bioremediation will require the implementation of a fertilizer amendment within and upstream of the impacts through trenches. The amendment will travel through the contaminated zone through groundwater flow. Monitoring wells are in place upstream, downstream, and within the plume to continually monitor contamination and amendment concentrations. The estimated timeline to achieve remedial objectives is 3 field season, with completion in fall of 2023.
