The Epekwitk Mena'taqug Centre- Public Comments Invited

May 13, 2020 - Infrastructure Canada must determine whether the proposed The Epekwitk Mena'taqug Centre project, located in the Abegweit First Nation Reserve, is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Infrastructure Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

Note- August 27, 2020: the location for this project has changed and is now 400 m East on St. Peters Road. INFC is required to restart the 30-day public comment period as of August 27,2020. Infrastructure Canada is inviting public comments until September 27, 2020, respecting this determination.

All comments received will be considered public. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website (https://iaac-aeic.gc.ca/050/evaluations/Protection?culture=en-CA).

The Proposed Project:

The proposed project involves the construction of a multi-purpose 8,295  sq. foot building that will have space devoted to employment services and Skills Partnership Fund (SPF), an artisan market space for Social Enterprise, Epekwitk Lanyards, demonstration and retail space for Social Enterprise Projects and local artisans, commercial kitchen for Social Enterprise - Epekwitk Gardens and preserves to prepare preserves for retain, cater meetings, events as well as food service window in peak tourism season, satellite office space for Mi'kmaq Confederacy of PEI and professional office space for Abegweit First Nation. The aim of the project is to provide an opportunity for local people to work and create on the reserve with an opportunity to sell in the retail space. It will improve access and increase the quality of cultural and community infrastructure for indigenous peoples living in PEI.
