Ottawa – March 31, 2020 – Environment and Climate Change Canada has determined that the proposed Rideau River Cableway Decommissioning is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:
•    impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
•    Indigenous knowledge;
•    community knowledge;
•    comments received from the public; and
•    technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.

Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination are:
•    Install turtle exclusion fencing prior to start of nesting period or complete work outside nesting period (October to March).
•    Minimize impacts to existing vegetation and vegetation clearing by using existing paths to access the work site.
•    Remove trees outside nesting window or complete nesting survey prior to tree removal to minimize impacts to migratory birds.  (Note: tree would not be removed during nesting window if nest found.)
•    Halt work and contact NCC Heritage Program if archaeological resources or human remains are discovered during project activities.
•    Deploy spill action plan and notify NCC and Spills Action Centre if any environmental spills occur during project activities.
•    Contact NCC Environmental Services Chief for guidance on how to proceed if evidence of contamination is encountered during project activities.
•    Check for dog-strangling vine prior to construction access.  Have contractor follow Clean Equipment Protocol for Industry (Halloran et al., 2016) if present.
•    Complete work as expeditiously as possible to minimize impacts to recreation in Vincent Massey Park.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is satisfied that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, Environment and Climate Change Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
