Notice of determination

March 30, 2020 – Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed Weenusk - Diesel Generating Station Fuel Tank Replacement is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

The determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • The removal of the tanks from the community will help in preventing further environmental issues in the community.
  • The Diesel Generating Station (DGS) is a critical infrastructure to the community. Preventing an upgrade poses a greater threat to the community than leaving the existing infrastructure in place.

Implementation of mitigation measures is required for the project to address:

  • Registered TSSA installer: A registered TSSA company with a valid class 2 petroleum license will need to be retained to remove the old tanks and install the new tanks on site. This company must be familiar with the TSSA's protocols of tank removal and installation.
  • Fueling of equipment: all equipment must be fueled in a designated fueling area away from water bodies, and must have spill kits on hand.
  • Tank Removal: All tanks must be decommissioned and removed from the community. Tanks must be disposed of in an approved manner a an approved facility.

Indigenous Services Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, Indigenous Services Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
