Notice determination

February 25, 2020 – Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed Windigo Island Water Treatment Project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

The determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • There will be positive impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples, which will result in clean drinking water for community members.
  • All proposed mitigation measures, required permits/approvals and appropriate reviews from delegated authorities have been incorporated into the project design and methodology.
  • The construction and maintenance of the system will provide employment and training  opportunities to members in the community.

Implementation of mitigation measures is required for the project to address
  • water quality
  • migratory birds
  • fish and fish habitat

Indigenous Services Canada is satisfied that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. Therefore, Indigenous Services Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
