Aurora LNG Project — Federal Funds Allocated to Assist Indigenous Participation and Consultation

December 9, 2016 — The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has transferred $364,560 to the Government of British Columbia to assist seven Indigenous groups in participating in the environmental assessment of the Aurora LNG Project, located in British Columbia.

The funds will be distributed by British Columbia's Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) on behalf of the Agency to the following Indigenous groups identified by the Agency:

The funding was made available to Indigenous groups through the Agency's Participant Funding Program and will enable participation and consultation in upcoming steps of the environmental assessment which is being conducted by B.C. The funding will be used to review and provide comments on the proponent's Application, the EAO's draft Assessment Report and the potential federal environmental assessment conditions.

The Proposed Project

Nexen Energy ULC is proposing the construction, operation, and decommissioning of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility and marine terminal at Digby Island in the Prince Rupert area of British Columbia. As proposed, the project would include a natural gas receiving and LNG production facility with a capacity of up to 24 million tonnes of LNG per year, a marine terminal, and supporting infrastructure and facilities. The project is expected to operate for a minimum of 25 years.
