Pierre River Mine Project - Environmental Assessment Terminated

OTTAWA, April 14, 2015 - The Minister of the Environment, Leona Aglukkaq, has terminated the environmental assessment of the proposed Pierre River Mine project north of Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The Minister terminated the environmental assessment and disbanded the Joint Review Panel thereby releasing the Panel members from their obligations under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012.

On February 23, 2015, the proponent, Shell Energy Canada indicated that it does not intend to proceed with the project at this time.  Shell is withdrawing its regulatory application for its 200,000 barrel-per-day heavy oil mine project.  The project was referred to a panel review in December 2010 and the Panel was appointed in June 2012.

The proponent may apply to commence a new environmental assessment process, if it determines in the future that it wants to proceed with the project.
