Woodfibre LNG Project — Federal Funds Transferred to and Distributed by the Government of British Columbia to Assist Aboriginal Participation and Consultation in a Substituted Environmental Assessment

November 25, 2014 — The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has transferred $147,100 to the Government of British Columbia to assist the participation of 10 Aboriginal groups in the substituted environmental assessment of the Woodfibre LNG Project, located seven kilometres southwest of Squamish, British Columbia.

The funds will be distributed by the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office on behalf of the Agency to the following Aboriginal groups identified by the Agency.

The funding made available to Aboriginal groups through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency will enable participation and consultation in upcoming steps of the substituted environmental assessment, which include reviewing and providing comments on the proponent's Application and the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office's draft Assessment Report.

The Proposed Project

Woodfibre Natural Gas Limited is proposing to construct and operate a liquefied natural gas facility (LNG) located seven kilometres southwest of Squamish, British Columbia, on the northwestern shoreline of Howe Sound. The proposed project includes the development of a natural gas liquefaction facility and an LNG transfer facility to enable the export of the LNG product to global markets via marine vessels. It is expected to operate for approximately 25 years and to produce between 1.5 and 2.1 million tonnes of LNG per year.
